A Narcissist’s helper is called a ‘flying monkey.’

Often, people get caught up in the drama of someone with narcissistic personality disorder, and even participate unknowingly in a narcissist’s ‘smear campaign,’ of someone who has stood up to them, criticized them, or reported them for abuse. Just like in the Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch directed these ‘Flying monkeys’ to go and do her dirty work, and this name has now become synonymous with those people who actively participate with the narcissist to help bring emotional abuse to the one who is trying to recover and stay safe from the narcissist.

This ‘flying monkey’ can even fake kindness and sympathy to gain your trust. The narcissist will employ the use of these ‘third parties’ to try to continue to have input, power, control, and continued impact on your heart.

Protecting yourself includes:

Disengaging; ignoring the attempt to engage you

Realize that you don’t need to defend/explain yourself

Understand that their disorder is not about you

Use clear boundaries

Believe your own thoughts, intuitions, and feelings

Protect yourself (and children!)

Remember that you are valuable, you deserve to be heard, respected, and treated with kindness, empathy, and compassion.

Narcissistic personality disordered people and their ‘flying monkeys’ are VERY difficult to deal with, and support can be helpful.
